Notes on the Use and Replacement of Antifreeze

 

Never mix different types or brands of antifreeze. Different types (ethylene glycol-based and propylene glycol-based) or brands of antifreeze may have completely different additive formulas. Mixing them can cause chemical reactions. This makes the additives ineffective and produces precipitates, which can seriously block the cooling system and corrode metal parts.

 

Thorough cleaning is required for the first filling. For new units or when changing to a different type of antifreeze, you must thoroughly flush the engine cooling system (including the radiator, engine block water jacket, water pipes, etc.) with clean water. Wait until all water in the system is completely drained before adding new antifreeze.

 

Check the liquid level and concentration regularly:Check the antifreeze level in the expansion tank (auxiliary tank) regularly (e.g., monthly). It should be kept between the minimum and maximum scale lines. If the level is too low, promptly add antifreeze of the same brand and model (do not add water directly unless it is an emergency).

You can use an antifreeze refractometer to test its concentration and freezing point every six months. If the freezing point rises (e.g., from -30℃ to -20℃), it means the antifreeze has been diluted or expired and needs to be replaced in time.

 

Strictly follow the replacement cycle. Even if the antifreeze level is normal, it must be completely replaced after the specified service life (usually 2 years). After long-term use, additives such as corrosion inhibitors and scale inhibitors in the antifreeze will gradually be consumed. They will lose their protective effect and may even become corrosive substances.
